Why magnets?

Magnets allow movement. Moving molecules, proteins or nucleic acids is at the core of diagnostics, and molecular biology as it allows separating a target compound from a complex mixture. No wonder have dozens of large diagnostic companies invested in their own magnetic particle platform.

 

Metal nanomagnets are stronger, smaller and have reliable linker capability

Turbobeads technology has solved the large problems with traditional magnetic particles:

A)     Size. Old technology magnetic beads are based on iron oxide, a delicate and soluble material that needs protection through a thick polymer shell. As a result, traditional beads are micrometer-size and companies cannot provide the today desired next generation of sub-100 nm particles. Turbobeads has replaced the thick polymer shells with the toughest material on earth, graphene, and only requires a single nanometer of carbon in its nanomagnets.

 

B)      Strength. Separation should be fast and quantitative. This requires maximum forces per particle to increase reactiveness of the magnetic reagent. The traditionally used iron oxide nanoparticles are of limited magnetization, as iron oxide is a mixture of iron (magnetic) and oxygen (not magnetic). Turbobeads has developed a unique technology where we use exclusively the magnetic metal in our particles, this provides an undiluted magnetization and unprecedented strength, reactivity and quantitative separation.

 

C)      Reliable attachment. Nanomagnets should stick where you position them and carry their valuable cargo over hundreds or thousands of cycles, in harsh and demanding environments or through viscous media. For a highest quality, the linker attachment is critical and determines the overall performance parameters. Turbobeads has made use of the strongest and most reliable chemical bond, the backbone of all biological and most chemical compounds, the carbon-carbon bond. Turbobeads nanomagnets offer a chemically defined all-carbon attachment over real chemical bonds and thereby outperform any traditional technology where oxide or noble metal bound reagents are sensitive to hydrolysis, exchange and rearrangement.
